BERRY TAKES RIDING LEAD WITH TRIPLE SATURDAY NIGHT

OKLAHOMA CITY – The first seven days of the 2011 Thoroughbred Season are in the book at Remington Park. The top of the jockey standings has the most familiar name in track history back in the lead, after a riding triple Saturday night.

Cliff Berry, a 13-time leading rider at Remington Park and the track’s all-time leader in Thoroughbred wins with 1,760, posted a hat trick and catapulted from a fifth-place tie to the lead in one night.

Berry won aboard Shifty Sheriff ($5.20 to win) in the second race and Lady Be Gold ($4.60) in the third before scoring in the richest open-company allowance of the evening in race number six. The $32,920 allowance at six furlongs had a field of five 3-year-olds and older going six furlongs. Berry piloted Herecomesbert to a front-running win by a length over a closing Behold De Buy with Sooner Red in third, 1-3/4 lengths back.

Herecomesbert crossed the finish in 1:09.49 over the fast main track. At even-money odds, Herecomesbert paid $4 to win, $2.40 to place and $2.10 to show. Behold De Buy paid $2.60 to place and $2.20 to show. Sooner Red returned $3 to place.

Owned by Jack G. Brooks of Arlington, Texas and trained by Bret Calhoun, the victory for Herecomesbert was his fourth from 13 attempts and his first in three tries at Remington Park. A 4-year-old colt by Purge from the Southern Halo mare Star Quality (Arg), Herecomesbert earned $18,900 for the win to move his career money to $78,971.

Berry’s seven wins leads the way in the rider standings. Bryan McNeil with six wins is alone in second position.

In the trainer standings, Steve Asmussen has the front with five wins while Calhoun is next with four.
