Nationally known trainer Richard Dutrow Jr., who saddled Big Brown to a win in the 2008 Kentucky Derby, was banned by the New York State Racing and Wagering Board from applying for a trainer’s license for 10 years.

The ruling handed out today (Oct. 12) is based on a recommendation by a hearing officer who said that Dutrow's remaining in New York racing would be "inconsistent with the best interests of racing." Earlier in 2011, Dutrow was denied a license in Kentucky and did not apply for a New Jersey license. Sources said Dutrow believed his New Jersey application would be denied.

Dutrow, who has been accused of violating 64 rules throughout his career, will appear in court on Oct. 17 to appeal the ruling with the judge expected to rule on a stay that day, his attorney, Mark Koenig said.

In a statement from Alex Waldrop on the New York State Racing and Wagering Board Ruling concerning Dutrow, the NTRA President and CEO said, “Today’s ruling by the New York State Racing and Wagering Board in the case of Rick Dutrow is a clear indicator that regulators will not tolerate a pattern of disregard for the rules of racing by a licensee. Integrity is an indispensable part of Thoroughbred racing, and all participants must abide by this principle in order to retain the privilege of participation.”
