Mexican-bred Yvete Sangalo reels in victory in Gaylord Memorial

OKLAHOMA CITY – Remington Park’s series of stakes races for Oklahoma Derby weekend started Friday night with 2-year-old fillies going 6-1/2 furlongs in the $50,000 E.L. Gaylord Memorial Stakes. In a field of eight with most prone to battle for the front, the winner rallied from off the pace.

Yvete Sangalo, a Mexican-bred, rallied from sixth position, over sixth lengths back after a quarter-mile was contested, to post victory for her owner Pozo de Luna of La Paz, Mexico. Trained by Kari Craddock, Yvete Sangalo is another winner she has started this season from her ownership group south of the border.

“The owner came to me and gave me 10 horses this spring,” Craddock explained. “Yvete Sangalo is the star of the stable so far. They are all bred to run longer so we’re looking forward to that.”

Ridden by Chris Landeros, Yvete Sangalo settled early and had plenty left once he asked her to move going into the lone turn. “I had her in the pocket going up the backstretch. At the three-eighths pole, I got her in the clear and she really kicked it in.”

While Yvete Sangalo began to move, the others ahead of her did as well, forcing her to wait until the stretch run to really make up ground. Solid Scam and Cowgirl N Up battled for the lead through the first four furlongs, going a quarter-mile in :21.80 and then the half-mile in :44.94. The quick duel took its toll on the pair as when they straightened out, Yvete Sangalo went right by them and drew clear to win by 4-1/4 lengths. She crossed the finish in 1:16.91 over a fast track.

Dismissed at 11-1 odds in the wagering, Yvete Sangalo paid $24.60 to win, $8.20 to place and $3.40 to show. Exchanted had tracked the pace-setters moving third throughout but she could not fend off the winner’s run, settling for second and paying $3.40 to place and $2.40 to show. Miss Lederhosen rallied from last to gain third, 1-1/2 lengths behind Exchanted and 5-3/4 lengths behind the winner, paying $3.20 to show.

Easy Touch was the beaten 8-5 wagering favorite, finishing sixth.

The victory in the Gaylord Memorial is the second from five starts for Yvete Sangalo and her first at Remington Park. The daughter of Hard Spun from the Unbridled mare Ya Tarra (GB) was bred in Mexico by Rancho Pozo de Luna. The $30,000 winner’s share for the night moves her career earnings to $47,219.

The E.L. Gaylord Memorial is named in honor of the longtime chairman and publisher of the Oklahoma Publishing Company. Gaylord was a staunch supporter of Remington Park and the state’s horse industry through the track’s early history.
