BACK TO ALLOWANCE COMPANY, OKIE RIDE EXCELS
OKLAHOMA CITY – Okie Ride tested the waters of a big sprint stakes race during the Opening Weekend of the Remington Park season in the $200,000 Sprint Cup. After a seventh-place effort, he was back for a $38,588 allowance event for Oklahoma-breds on Thursday night, handling the chore with better results.
Owned by the Richter Family Trust of Perkins, Okla. and trained by Kenny Nolen, Okie Ride was ridden by Floyd Wethey, Jr. Sitting just off the lead in third for the first half mile of the six-furlong sprint, Okie Ride moved around rivals to take the lead into the stretch before drawing off to win by 2-1/2 lengths. Steal Your Face moved with Okie Ride but had no answer as the winner pulled away to win in 1:08.70 over a fast track.
The wagering favorite at 6-5 odds, Okie Ride paid $4.40 to win, $2.40 to place and $2.10 to show. Steal Your Face returned $2.80 to place and $2.10 to show. Catabout was along for third, nine lengths behind the winner, paying $2.20 to show.
The win was the fourth from 13 career starts for Okie Ride and it was his second victory at Remington Park. An Oklahoma-bred 4-year-old gelding by Candy Ride (Arg) from the Geiger Counter mare Tic Tic, Okie Ride picked up $22,394 to move his career bankroll to $129,565.
Remington Park’s racing week continues with action on Friday and Saturday night at 6:30pm (central). The richest race of the 2011 Thoroughbred Season is fast approaching as the $400,000 Oklahoma Derby on Sunday, Oct. 16 is nearly here.
